Fall Sermon Series

“Generosity”

This fall we will be focusing on yet another of the Intentional Practices of the Christian Church in our continuing desire to become a congregation of Intentional Practice. Since the Spring of 2005 we have been focusing on this goal in sermon series. We began with an overview of all the Intentional Practices, and we dealt in depth with the practices of Healing, Forgiveness, and Sabbath.

Generosity is a practice which the church often avoids because it
confronts the way we feel about our money and our possessions.
Do they really belong to God and we are simply stewards?
Or do they really belong to us and God gets God’s share?

Here are the topics and the texts for the series:

September 23 · Why Talk About Generosity?
(Matthew 6:19-24)
September 30 · God's Intent for our Treasure
October 7 · The World is Waiting
(Ephesians 1:16-19)
October 14 · Earthly Realities
(Luke 16:10-15)
October 21 · Misconceptions about Money
(James 5:1-8)
October 28 · The Power of Money
(Matthew 19:16-23)
November 4 · Grateful Hearts or Fearful Hearts
(Acts 4:32-5:6)
November 11 · Making Things Right
(Micah 6:8; James 1:2627)
November 18 · To Whom Does It All Belong?
(Luke 10:25-37)

SUMMER 2007
Steeple to People - Summer NEWSLETTER

Summer Preaching Series on Galatians
“Free in Christ-Traveling Light”

Our preaching focus this summer will be on Paul’s letter to the Galatian church. In his introduction to this letter in The Message translation of the Bible, Eugene Peterson says of this letter: “When men and women get their hands on religion, one of the first things they often do is turn it into an instrument for controlling others, either putting or keeping them ‘in their place.’ The history of such religions manipulation and coercion is long and tedious. It is little wonder that people who have known religion on such terms experience release or escape from it as freedom. The problem is that the freedom turns out to be short lived.

Paul of Tarsus was doing his diligent best to add yet another chapter to this dreary history when he was converted by Jesus to do something radically and entirely different—a free life in God. Through Jesus, Paul learned that God was not an impersonal force to be used to make people behave in certain prescribed ways, but a personal Savior who set us free to live a free life. God did not coerce us from without, but set us free from within.”

Each week during the summer we will be examining one of the freedoms which Paul believes we receive in Christ. Our companion book will be Traveling Light by Eugene Peterson. The topics and texts are as follows:
